Having begun in 2006 and embarking on a new phase in 2025, the Encuentro provides, from its base in Asturias, a space for reflection, learning and dialogue on documentary photography, human rights, memory, social justice and press freedom.

Its annual event is merely the most visible aspect of work that takes place throughout the year across the region: in classrooms, cultural venues, social organisations and communities where images come to life and become memory, conversation and critical awareness.
