Presentation of the exhibition “No Life Left to Drift: 11 Years Aboard the OPEN ARMS”

Thursday, 1 October, the former Rula de Gijón. 11.00 am.

Tomorrow Thursday, 1 October, the presentation of the exhibition “No Life Adrift. 11 Years Aboard the Open Arms”, as part of the Asturias International Photojournalism Festival 2026, which is being held in the city from 1 to 3 October. The event will be attended by Óscar Camps, director of Open Arms, and Álex Zapico, director of EIFA.

The exhibition, dedicated to the history of Open Arms, brings together images, objects and testimonies linked to more than a decade of the organisation’s work in the Mediterranean. Inside the former Rula building is one of the vessels used by Open Arms during its first rescue operations in Lesbos in its early days. Alongside it are life jackets, personal belongings and other items linked to those rescued, offering an insight into the reality of those who undertook these journeys. Outside, the exhibition continues with a selection of images documenting some of the rescues and missions carried out by the organisation.

A photojournalism project that focuses on migration, rescue operations at sea and the stories of the people behind each image.

Throughout the week, hundreds of pupils from various schools across Asturias, as well as university students, have visited this exhibition and gained an insight into the work that Open Arms has been carrying out for the past 11 years, thanks to the explanations provided by Ángeles Schjaer.
